When Does a Business Actually Need a Strategy Consultant?

The question of when to bring in outside help is one that most founders and directors approach with some ambiguity. Consultants are expensive, the process takes time, and there is a reasonable concern that the recommendations will state the obvious. Those concerns are not unfounded. But there are specific conditions under which an independent perspective adds something that internal teams genuinely cannot replicate, and it is worth being precise about what those conditions are.

Independent Consultant or Internal Strategy Team: How to Choose

Businesses that have reached a certain size often face a choice: build an internal strategy capability or continue to rely on outside advice when strategic questions arise. The answer is not the same for every organisation, and the factors that determine it are worth thinking through carefully rather than defaulting to whichever option feels more familiar.

How to Run a Leadership Away-Day That Actually Produces Decisions

The leadership away-day is a fixture of organisational life, and its reputation is mixed for good reason. The format has a tendency to produce the appearance of strategic thinking without the substance of it. Teams spend a day discussing things they already broadly agree on, generate a long list of actions, and return to the office to find that the operational rhythm has absorbed the day's output within a fortnight. The problem is rarely the people in the room. It is the design of the day itself.

“Harry asked questions in the first session that our board had been avoiding for two years. The strategic review gave us a document we actually used.”

— Margaret Osei, Managing Director, professional services firm
“The succession planning work was sensitive and Harry handled it with real care. We came…”

Our products

What We Bring to the Table

01

Independent Perspective

We have no stake in your existing structures, suppliers, or internal politics. That distance is what makes the advice useful.

02

Structured Thinking

Every engagement begins with a diagnostic phase. We map what is actually happening before we suggest what should change.

03

Practical Recommendations

Our reports are written to be acted on, not filed. Each recommendation comes with a clear owner, a timeline, and a measurable outcome.

04

Long-Term Relationship

Most clients return for a second or third engagement. We keep notes from every session and pick up exactly where we left off.

Harry Caldwell

Harry Caldwell spent eleven years in corporate strategy before founding Future Anchor Hub in 2017, having led restructuring programmes for mid-sized manufacturers and a brief stint advising a regional development agency on inward investment. He holds a postgraduate qualification in organisational change and has a particular interest in how family-owned businesses navigate succession. Outside the office, he keeps a vegetable plot that he tends with the same methodical patience he brings to a client engagement. He writes most of his thinking in longhand before it reaches a screen.

FAQ

Common questions

Q01

How long does a typical engagement take from first call to final report?

It depends on the type of work. A strategic review runs six weeks from the kick-off session to the final presentation. Organisational design work typically takes eight to ten weeks. We agree a timeline at the outset and build in a buffer for the diagnostic phase, which sometimes surfaces things that need more time to understand properly.

Q02

Do you work with businesses outside Tokyo?

Yes. A significant portion of the work happens remotely, particularly the advisory retainer. For engagements that involve staff interviews or facilitated workshops, Harry travels to the client's location. Travel costs are agreed in advance and billed at cost, not marked up.
